SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL OF NEW ZEALAND PARTICIPATES IN THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD WAR 1
SGI at the WW100 Commemoration Peace Conference
SGI will participate in the WW100 Commemoration international peace conference which will be held in Auckland on 19-20 September at the Auckland University of Technology.
The conference which is entitled “World Without War – Action for Peace,” has invited Mr. Kimiaki Kawai, Programme Director for Peace Affairs of SGI Japan, who will be a keynote speaker at the interfaith session at the conference. He will speak on SGI’s collaboration with the world’s faith communities to eliminate nuclear weapons and prevent the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of their use.
Mr. Kawai was involved at the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons in December 2014 at which representatives from a diverse range of faith traditions signed a Joint Statement calling for nuclear abolition. This joint statement was recently presented to the UN in the civil society session at the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference on May 1 in New York.
The “Everything You Treaure” exhibition, which was jointly produced by SGI and the International Committee to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) will be shown at the conference.
The Steering Committee for the conference is composed of representatives from the Peace Foundation, the Basel Peace Office in Switzerland, the Goodwill Foundation, the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies of the university of Otago, the United Nations Association of New Zealand and Soka Gakkai International of New Zealand.
Volunteers wishing to help out at the conference or attend can contact Joycelyn Raffills, SGINZ Public Affairs Coordinator.
