Statement from SGINZ on the covid19 pandemic as at 17th March 2020
We would like to advise that in the unfolding of the spread of the pandemic of COVID 19 coronavirus in New Zealand and the world, SGINZ has decided to suspend all organisational activities as of now. This suspension will be in place until the end of May. At that time we will review our situation and decide whether to resume activities or not.
While we are taking a much more conservative approach than current ministry of health guidelines, we are following the lead of SGI worldwide. This decision has not been taken lightly and is based on strong advice from SGI. As Buddhists, we must do our absolute utmost to prevent the spreading of the corona virus in society. The health and well-being of our members is paramount. We must also protect, especially our members who are seniors/elderly or who have underlying health conditions. Therefore all our activities including all district activities, world peace chanting meetings, leaders meetings, home visitations, and chanting sessions are now suspended.
In addition, the SGINZ centres in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin will be closed to members, friends and guests. Morning chanting sessions, and any other events at the centres are suspended. SGINZ staff, Focus teams and Gardening team in Auckland and Wellington will continue to carry out their respective duties, but as the centres will be closed, there will no longer be a need for centre duty or cleaning duty.
Bookshop, Donations and Tai Aronui Buddhism in Focus subscription can be carried out online at http://sginz.gposnz.com/c.aspx and https://sginz.org/member-resources/. In addition, any other requests can be made to the office by email or phone.
At this time more than ever it is our united prayer and our heartfelt connection to one another that is important. Let’s use this opportunity to reach out to every person, by phone and email, chanting simultaneously, and studying earnestly. Let’s make new waves of hope based on sincere encouragement and continue to expand our movement of humanism and human revolution in society.
Thank you for all your efforts. Let’s do our very best.
